Who Equated is not for

Most software pages tell you who they're for. The more useful list is the other one, and it costs us nothing to be straight about it.

You want your books handled without looking at them

Equated is built on the assumption that an operator confirms. Agents draft the entries and attach the evidence, but somebody has to say yes. If what you want is to hand the books to something and never think about them again, we are the wrong shape — and any accounting product that promises you that today is describing a thing it cannot safely do.

You have a full-time controller

The work Equated removes is the work a founder or a part-time bookkeeper is stuck doing: finding receipts, noticing a broken bank feed, unwinding a bad automated match. A company with a controller already has someone whose judgment covers that, and they will want the depth of a system built for finance teams rather than for operators.

Your books are one currency, cash basis, and simple

If you invoice in one currency, pay a handful of vendors, and file on a cash basis with no accrual or multi-entity complexity, a spreadsheet or a cheap single-entry tool will serve you better than a real general ledger. Equated earns its keep when receipts arrive in USD against CAD card lines, when input tax credits depend on documentary evidence, and when the close has to be defensible.

You operate outside North America

Equated is built for Canadian and US companies, including the cross-border ones. The tax handling assumes GST/HST or US state sales tax. The year-end assumes a T2 or a US return. If you file somewhere else, none of the parts that make Equated worth using apply to you.

You want to stay on QuickBooks and make it better

There are good tools that sit on top of QuickBooks and improve one part of it. Equated is not one of them. It is a general ledger, which means adopting it is a migration, not an add-on. We are running that migration on our own books first, and writing up what it costs as we go.

What we are still building

Equated is early and we run our own books on it. That is the honest state of things: we are the customer whose ledger breaks first. If you need a product with a decade of edge cases already found, that is a reasonable thing to need, and it is not us yet. See pricing for what is available today.

Questions

Does Equated do bookkeeping automatically?

No. Agents draft entries and Equated shows you the evidence behind each one, but a person confirms before anything is committed to the ledger. We do not believe fully autonomous bookkeeping is safe yet, and we do not ship it.

Is Equated available outside North America?

No. Equated is built for Canadian and US companies, including cross-border ones. The tax handling assumes GST/HST or US state sales tax, and the year-end filing assumes a T2 or a US return.

Can Equated replace my accountant?

No, and it is not trying to. It removes the coordination work underneath the accounting — chasing documents, detecting gaps, checking matches — so that judgment work is what your accountant actually spends time on.
