Equated vs Rillet

Rillet is built for the company we say we are not for — the one that has already hired a controller. The interesting question is not which is better, it is where the line falls.

Rillet and Equated are in the same category and are not really competing.

Both are modern general ledgers rather than outsourced services. Both are aimed at SaaS. Both assume software should be doing work a person used to do by hand. On the premise there is no argument.

The line is a hire

Rillet’s own site lists CFOs, accountants, accounting firms, and private equity among who it serves. Its feature list is close management, multi-entity consolidation, advanced revenue recognition, flexible GAAP reporting.

That is a finance team’s toolkit. Those features exist because somebody’s job is running a close, and they need the system to be deep rather than quiet.

We publish a page about who we are not for, and one of the entries is a company with a full-time controller. The work we remove is the work a founder or a part-time bookkeeper is stuck doing — finding a receipt, noticing a broken bank feed, unwinding a bad automated match. A controller’s judgment already covers that, and what they want next is depth.

So the line between the two products is not a feature. It is a hire.

What quote-only pricing means here

Rillet does not publish prices. For a product sold to finance teams that is conventional, and it is not the same signal it would be on a self-serve tool — the buyer is going to have a call regardless, because the evaluation involves migrating a live ledger.

It does mean you cannot work out from the website whether you are the customer. If you are a four-person company wondering whether this is your next step, the answer is probably that you will know when it is, and it will not be quiet about it.

Consolidation is the honest gap

We do not do multi-entity consolidation, and we are not going to imply otherwise. If you have several legal entities that need to roll up, that is a real requirement and we do not meet it.

Same for advanced revenue recognition. Usage-based tiers, multi-year contracts with modifications, ASC 606 treatment that has to survive an audit — that is a depth problem, and depth is what Rillet is selling.

Where we differ

We are built for the stage where the books have to be right and current and there is nobody whose job that is.

Agents draft the entries and attach the evidence, an operator confirms, and the close stops being a project. That earns its keep when the alternative is a founder doing it on a Sunday. It stops being the point once you have hired the person who would otherwise be doing it, and at that moment you should be looking at products like Rillet rather than at us.

Choose Rillet if

  • You have a controller or a finance team, and what you need is depth rather than fewer hours spent on the books.
  • You have multiple entities to consolidate and GAAP reporting that has to hold up.
  • Revenue recognition is genuinely complex — usage tiers, multi-year contracts, modifications — and needs to be automated rather than spreadsheeted.
  • You are running a close as a process, with owners and a calendar, rather than as a thing that happens when someone gets to it.

Questions

What does Rillet cost?

They do not publish it. The site routes to a demo request and a sales conversation, so what you pay is the result of that. This is normal for products sold to finance teams and it does mean you cannot size the decision from the website.

Is Rillet a competitor to Equated?

In category, yes — both are modern general ledgers rather than services, and both are aimed at SaaS. In stage, mostly no. Rillet names CFOs, accountants, and accounting firms among its customers. We are built for the period before those people are on the payroll.

When would we move from Equated to Rillet?

When you hire a controller. Our own page on who we are not for says it plainly: a company with a controller wants the depth of a system built for finance teams rather than for operators. Rillet is a credible version of that system.

Does Rillet do revenue recognition?

It lists advanced revenue recognition, multi-entity accounting and consolidation, close management, and flexible GAAP reporting. That is a finance-team feature set, and it is the honest reason the two products do not overlap as much as the category suggests.
