Equated vs Odoo

Odoo gives you accounting free forever, for unlimited users. The moment you need a second app the model flips to per-seat across your whole team, and that is where the real price lives.

Odoo’s accounting app is free. Not a trial, not a starter tier with a transaction cap — free, forever, for unlimited users.

That is the most generous offer in this comparison by a wide margin, and it is worth taking seriously rather than assuming there is a catch buried somewhere.

The catch is a shape, not a trap

The One App Free plan is exactly what it says. One app. Add a second — inventory, CRM, projects, anything — and you move to Standard at CAD 35.20 per user per month billed yearly, and that covers all apps.

So the cost model inverts at the boundary. Below it, price is independent of headcount. Above it, price is entirely headcount. A five-person company goes from CAD $0 to roughly CAD 176 a month, and nothing about their accounting changed — they just added a second tool.

That is not a dark pattern. It is a suite’s pricing logic applied honestly, and Odoo tells you exactly where the line is. But it means the relevant question is not “what does Odoo accounting cost”, it is “how long will accounting be the only Odoo app we use”.

Open source is a real answer to a real fear

Odoo is open source and the Custom plan supports on-premise deployment. If your objection to cloud accounting is that a vendor holds your general ledger and can change the terms, Odoo is the only product in this comparison that genuinely answers it.

Nothing else here — including us — lets you take the source and run it yourself.

That answer has a price, and it is not the licence fee. Self-hosting a general ledger means someone owns backups, upgrades, and the security of the box it runs on. For a company with technical capacity that is a fair trade. For a company whose engineering time is the scarce resource, it is a second job.

What you are actually adopting

Odoo is an ERP suite that happens to include accounting, and the accounting is good partly because it shares a data model with everything else Odoo does.

If you will use that — inventory moving, manufacturing orders, a CRM feeding invoices — the coherence is the whole point and per-seat pricing buys something real.

If you want your books to be right and you are never going to open the manufacturing module, you are adopting a large system to use one corner of it.

Where we differ

We do not have a free tier and we are not open source, so on both of those Odoo simply wins.

What we do instead is narrower. Agents draft the entries and attach the evidence, an operator confirms, and the year-end filing is a CPA-reviewed add-on rather than a thing you go and arrange. Odoo will hold a correct ledger and leave the judgment and the return entirely to you — which, if you have an accountant you trust and a free app, may be exactly the arrangement you want.

Choose Odoo if

  • Accounting is genuinely all you need from it, in which case Odoo is free for as many people as you like and that is hard to argue with.
  • You want the source, the ability to self-host, and no vendor holding your ledger.
  • You are going to run inventory, CRM, manufacturing, or field service anyway, and having them share one data model is worth the per-seat bill.
  • You have in-house technical capacity and would rather configure a system than adopt one.

Questions

Is Odoo accounting really free?

Yes, and more generously than most free tiers. The One App Free plan is CAD $0 for one app with unlimited users, hosted, with support included. If accounting is the only app you need, that is a complete product at no cost.

Where does Odoo start charging?

At the second app. Standard is CAD 35.20 per user per month billed yearly, or CAD 44.00 monthly, and it covers all apps. That is per user, so a five-person team goes from free to roughly CAD 176 a month — the jump is driven by headcount, not by usage.

Can I self-host Odoo?

On the Custom plan, which is CAD 55.00 per user per month billed yearly and offers Odoo Online, Odoo.sh, or on-premise deployment, plus Studio, multi-company, and external API access. Odoo is open source, so the source is available regardless.

Does Odoo file my taxes?

No. Odoo is software, not a service — there is no CPA reviewing anything and no return being filed on your behalf. Whatever your jurisdiction requires at year-end, you or your accountant handle separately.
